Charles de Saint-G.

Charles de Saint-G. was a thirteen-year-old boy with extreme intellectual disability. He barely knew his parents and could hardly feed himself. The Society first asked Saint Louis whether the boy's spirit could be called while he was still alive.

The medium’s hand begins writing...

AllanWill you kindly tell us whether we can call the spirit of the disabled boy we are thinking of?

Mediums’ GuideYou may call him as though you were calling the spirit of someone deceased.

AllanThen we may call him at any moment?

Mediums’ GuideYes. His soul is held to his body by physical links, but not by spiritual ones. So it can free itself from the body at any time.

AllanCharles de Saint-G., can you hear us?

Charles de Saint-G.I am an unhappy spirit bound to the Earth, like a bird tied by the leg.

AllanIn your present condition, are you aware, as a spirit, of the nullity of your human state?

Charles de Saint-G.Certainly. I clearly feel my captivity.

AllanWhen your body sleeps and your spirit is freed, are your thoughts as clear as if you were in a normal state?

Charles de Saint-G.When my wretched body sleeps, I am a little freer to lift my thoughts toward the heaven I long for.

AllanDoes your physical condition cause you pain as a spirit?

Charles de Saint-G.Yes. It is a punishment.

AllanDo you remember your previous existence?

Charles de Saint-G.Oh yes. It is the cause of my present exile.

AllanWhat were you in that life?

Charles de Saint-G.A young libertine, in the reign of Henri the Third.

AllanYou say your present condition is a punishment. Was it chosen by you?

Charles de Saint-G.No.

AllanHow can this life help your progress, when your earthly state seems so empty?

Charles de Saint-G.My state is not empty in the eyes of God, who imposed it on me.

AllanDo you foresee the end of your present life?

Charles de Saint-G.No. I only know that sooner or later I will return to my native country.

AllanWhat were you doing as a spirit between your last incarnation and this one?

Charles de Saint-G.It was because of my frivolity in the spirit state that God sentenced me to this imprisonment.

AllanIn daily life, are you aware of what happens around you, despite the imperfection of your organs?

Charles de Saint-G.I see. I hear. But my body understands nothing and sees nothing.

AllanCan we do anything useful for you?

Charles de Saint-G.Nothing.

AllanAre prayers as useful to a reincarnated spirit as to a discarnate one?

Mediums’ GuidePrayers are always pleasing to God. They cannot help this unhappy spirit immediately in his present state, but they are taken into account and will help him later.

This case confirmed that people with severe mental disability do not have deficient spirits. Their spirit keeps its abilities, but the damaged body prevents those abilities from showing freely.
